Hi Rebecca! I really enjoyed this piece. I wanted to share something with you, that to this day, makes my skin crawl.

When I was in my teens, it was in the early 70's and there was only one Black quarterback in the NFL. I was sort of a naive kid back then, and I posed the question to a family member, of "Why are there hardly any Black quarterbacks in the NFL (?)." My family member responded with something that to this day blows my mind. The answer I got was "Because they can't think". As if to say that Black people aren't smart enough to lead an NFL team.

Rebecca, I still cringe when I think about that conversation. I've reflected on it through the years, and I am so glad that I don't share that opinion. It's appalling to me, and it should be. It didn't make sense to me then, as a young teen. Now it's very apparent to me, how utterly racist that family member was.

I'm not sure why I felt I needed to share this with you. There are many Black QB's in football now, and while it's a testament to progress made, we still have so far to go in this country. Racism has existed for far too long. I look back at the struggles of Jackie Robinson and Rosa Parks (just to name a few), and it's truly humbling how brave they were.

By the way: the Black QB at that time was Doug Williams of the Tampa Bay Buchaneers.

Keep writing what you write, Rebecca. And stay well.

-Scott
