There are countless cases of homicide among young women in this country. Many go relatively unknown and unnoticed. And there are those that capture the heart and soul of our country. The Gabby Petito case is one such example. If, like many others, you have asked yourself why this case is so prominent in the news right now, I have some theories.
First and foremost, Gabby’s case did not begin with news media attention. It began with social media attention. Gabby began posting her travels on her YouTube account, hoping to become an official travel blogger. That was a dream that she wanted to make a reality. Many social media followers began tuning in each day to Gabby’s channel, to see her latest entries. When you religiously follow a person on social media, an interesting phenomenon occurs. Many people begin to feel like they know that person. They begin to bond with them, even if they have never met them. I believe this to be one of the reasons that Gabby’s case has become so obsessive, with so many. It is simply the power of social media.
